Artist's Statement

Georgianna Heller

Wood and metals are my medium of choice. I feel akin to wood. It is solid and of the earth. Metals also of the earth, affected by the atmosphere are turned into varying colors and rust.

My studio is full of found or created wood scraps, metals and hardware which are used as jumping off points. When I "show up" to work, I'm never sure of what will happen. Sometimes nothing more happens than trying to make sense of the chaos by sweeping and organizing. And other times a single object will become the focus of a new assemblage. Then the fun begins! Balancing the chaos!

I get excited by the textures and the mysterious stories these pieces of old wood or rusted metals evoke. I've learned over time that simply showing up to work is a journey of reward/joy and/or defeat, but always a process... a journey of mystery and illumination... a visceral, visual dance and song of the soul.

Artist influences include, Louise Nevelson, Charles Renney MacIntosh, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky and Amedeo Modigliani.
